Great game and system. Sadly, we found the dice and board to be close to unusable. The dice were so big they had a hard time rolling, and the board would never lie flat.

For me, it is too simple, simple great battle of history. It took me forever to get the sticker on. I understand and I'm happy about the success of the system. But it is clearly not my cup of tea.

All other ancient games that I have played have moderate to elaborate command control rules. This is accomplished in C & C:Ancients through the use of command cards. In spite of its simplicity, the dynamics of play is like that of more complicated games. I concur with John's comments of 11/7/2008 concerning the replayablilty of the scenarios. A friend and I have played Zama at least twenty times. The majority of the results were different, from one sided saughters to nail biters decided on the last turn. Sometimes the Romans, like in the actual battle, succeed in rampaging the Cartheginian Elephants and driving off Hannibal's cavalry. One time when playing the Romans, my opponent succeeded in engaging and destroying all of my light cavalry with a single elephant unit. Another great feature of the system is the play balance. There is no such thing as an unwinable battle. In every scenario we have played so far, even the unbalanced ones, the underdog has a reasonable chance of pulling an upset.

Great intro to wargaming. Great for fast, replayable contests with just enough relation to the history to be intriguing. More history built into the system here than in Memoir '44, Battlelore or Battle Cry.

Game is great fun, same scenario can be played over and over with a different conclusion each time.

Fun game! I'm a miniature wargamer and I find this game very fun and similar to. I was not given the right mix of colored blocks, but otherwise I'm very happy with the game.

Fun game that is a great second step to get people into the war gaming hobby.

Great game for Friday night boardgaming clubs. You could probably get in 2-3 games easily in a 3 hour period. Really like the way that the rules are laid out. The blocks take a bit of time to label but after you are done off you go to fight Hannibal or as the Carthaginians threaten Rome with capture!

Commands & Colors: Ancients allows you to re-fight epic battles of the ancient world. Here the focus is on the two rivals for power in the Western Mediterranean – Carthage and Rome. Will you, as Hannibal, triumph over larger Roman armies; or as Scipio Africanus, will you beat Hannibal with newer tactics of your own?

Units in both armies can only move and fight when ordered. The command playing cards supply those orders, providing an element of luck that creates a fog of war and presents players with both challenges and opportunities. You must maximize your opportunities by playing your command cards judiciously. How well you handle the diverse units, their weapons, and the terrain, will determine victory.

Commands & Colors: Ancients contains the battles of Akragas, Crimissos River, Ticinus River, Lake Trasimenus, Cannae, Dertosa, Castulo, Baecula, Ilipa, and Zama.
