News Bulletins

Hi guys!

Hooray! As I write this, THUNDER ALLEY is landing on our customers' doorsteps and game tables. At last, so many of you are going to get to see firsthand what our development teams have been so excited about! We think you're really going to like this game. I've played it a bunch, and I think it's one of our best ever. If you guys enjoy it anywhere near as much as we do, you're in for a treat!

I want to start today with some details about our Kickstarter campaign for Twilight Struggle, and especially about our upcoming Twilight Struggle Collector's Edition.  This update also includes info on a really cool new P500 addition - a strategic ACW game by Mark Simonitch, plus updated charging and shipping info, an updated Production Outlook, plus some news tidbits and Inside-GMT stuff in this column. I hope you enjoy it!

Twilight Struggle Kickstarter and TS Collector's Edition!!

Wow! You guys have REALLY stepped up and supported our Kickstarter campaign to partner with Playdek to create digital versions of Twilight Struggle! The campaign is into its final week now, and it seems that every few days we're surpassing another Stretch Goal! When I last checked the total, it was about $277,000 - about 5 1/2 times our campaign goal and just a tremendous show of support from you guys - thanks SO much! You guys rock!

So, two quick things here:

1. If you'd still like to help out with the Kickstarter campaign, there's still time. Just go to the Twilight Struggle Kickstarter Page and pledge your support for whichever tier you'd like. Thanks!

2. As part of the Kickstarter campaign, we are creating a Collector's Edition boardgame of Twilight Struggle, with some really cool components. Just click this "What's in the TS Collector's Edition?" link and check the June 20 update to get the details I gave the Kickstarter guys in last week's update on what is included.

So a bunch of you guys have asked whether we are going to make this Collector's Edition available outside of the Kickstarter campaign. The answer is YES, we'll print about 10-15% more than we need for the KS folks and will use those first of all to make sure we can replace any bad components, etc. With whatever is left, we'll make an announcement at that time and make those available to our customers on a first-come, first-served basis.

I know some of you just "don't do Kickstarter." And of course we respect that - we know it's just not some folks' cup of tea. But if you are interested in getting the Collector's Edition of Twilight Struggle, I want to let you know that the Kickstarter backers are going to get by far the best deals. The three things you should be aware of, if you're thinking about maybe trying to pick up one of our remaining copies later:

- Only the Kickstarter version of the CE will have a certificate of authenticity and be signed by the designers. This is so the backers get something unique and special.

- Kickstarter backers will get their CE much sooner than anyone else. It'll be at least a few months after we sent out the backers' CEs before we make the remainder available.

- Kickstarter backers will get the best price on their CE. We are heavily discounting the CE for the KS campaign in order to help funnel as much of the funding as possible to Playdek to use in making the digital game really cool. When we sell the remainder of the CEs that were not KS rewards, the price will be $199. We will not sell these in stores nor do we intend to discount them, so if you want the best price, the Kickstarter deal is it.

I think this answers the questions I've been getting from you guys as to our intent with the Twilight Struggle Collector's Edition. If you have further questions, just let us know.

A Plug for Rising Glory

Fading Glory, the first in our line of low-complexity, high-entertainment value Deluxe Napoleonic games that we're creating in concert with our friends at VPG, has been really well received by our customers. It's sold very well for us, the reviews have been terrific, and  the word of mouth we get is that it's just a heckuva fun game and a great value - four games in a pack - with terrific production values (mounted boards, thick counters, etc).

So I'm a little confused by the P500 performance of the 2nd game in the series, Rising Glory. It's at 422 on the P500 list, but it's not rising real quickly and I can't figure out why. I understand that the topic isn't Waterloo, but still, there are some excellent battles in here, and with the new VPG 4.0 rules to add in, this one is going to be at least as good a value as Fading Glory.

Someone suggested that because one of the battles in the pack (Jena) was done before in C3i, maybe you guys see less value in this package. The VPG folks assure me that this package includes a completely new version of Jena, as well as a lot of other "new" information. Here's a post by Kim Meints on CSW a few days ago, with more details on the entire project:

Thought I'd chime in to let people know about the 4 battles in Rising Glory(Napoleonic 20 system) and calm any fears about getting a rehashed Jena 20 which appeared in C3I.
Jena 2nd Ed.The new 2nd edition is a whole new game, really. I mean top to bottom the old version can't compare. New expanded map (not size wise but in scale) showing more of the theater the campaign was fought in and opening up far great options for both sides on where they will strike. The Prussians now have What If units plus 2 that start on the map and with the Optional rule may either be at full strength, at Cadre, or even eliminated altogether (Had fought earlier and those actions could have effected them at Jena). A whole new rule for Bernadotte giving the French either great joy or cursing him like Napoleon did historically. I tested the original and this 2nd ed was such a joy to play that anyone who owns the earlier should be pleasantly surprised & happy with the new edition.

Eylau 20- Eylau is the exclusive new game for RG and GMT. This version of the battle shows a much larger theater to fight over and the French to approach the battle area from. Bernadotte even can make a showing but still no Lannes. Right now the Russians are just marching into the Eylau area so they can either move to the historical ground or like I did so many times in testing make an advance on a still weak French just coming in and hit them in a much more forward position. Options also include the French dividing up their units into 3 groups and decide where they will come in. So you could have Nappy and the main force arrive where Ney did historically or more over where Davout did. That really can force the Russians to wonder where and by how much, plus the Russians have command problems the first few turns to limit their actions. Overall Eylau was a joy to play.

Austerlitz 20- Well besides a makeover in card events and leaders added I want to have just a couple of things put in that I sort of wanted or wished had been added after it was published by VPG. Just enough to spice it up a tad but not over do it as it was a 2009 CSR Award Nominee and don't want to mess with it too much that it effects balance.

Wagram 20- Well it's a newer title and included in VPG's Danube 20 combo pack so about the only thing there to do is I would like at least 2 (maybe 3) more leaders added in.

When RG hits the P500 mark Lance McMillan the series Developer and I, plus the lead playtesters, will go over anything they would like to see changed in either Austerlitz or Wagram to make them even better for the new buyers.

Just wanted to let anyone who may be sitting on the fence with Rising Glory that had Fading Glory and thinking they would be getting basically the same old versions they already had from C3I or VPG know that they'll be very surprised and hopefully pleased with the new versions.

So, I hope you guys find that information helpful, and I also want to encourage you to go over to the Rising Glory P500 Page and add it to your P500 orders. The designs are near completion and our art teams are ready to go. This one will not take long to produce once we have the orders. So please, order away! Thanks for your support!

We're Using Instagram For Info On Not-Yet-Released Games

You guys probably know that our CSW GMT topic, our Facebook page, our YouTube channel, and our Twitter feed stay pretty busy just trying to disseminate news on current games, schedules, promotions, reviews, training videos, and enhancing customer communications. We don't really have a lot of bandwidth in any of those places to focus too much on the games that our design and development teams are still working on (some on the P500 list, many not yet).

We get a lot of requests for "what are you guys working on?" kind of information, so we decided to start using our Instagram account to focus on those not-yet-published games. So, on a daily basis, we post several sneak peeks at various games on the P500 list, and even a few in earlier design stages that haven't made it to P500 yet.

So, for those of you who just want to know "the latest" of what's going on behind the scenes, and get more frequent updates on how games in the Design and Development pipeline are progressing, come follow us on Instagram - @GMTGames - and we'll give you a peek "under the hood" at games in development!

Also, for you design and development team members who'd like to share playtest info, new art, replays, "how this game works" info, etc - just drop me a note or a link to [email protected] and I'll make sure your sneak peeks make it to our Instagram page. Thanks!

New P500 Addition!

Do we have a treat for you guys! Those of you who attented CSW Expo in Tempe last month got to preview a new Strategic American Civil War game by Mark Simonitch - The U.S. Civil War. It has some of its roots in Eric Lee Smith's game for Victory Games back in the 1980s. Mark says it's also influenced by Mark Herman's For the People, and you guys know by now that any game that Mark Simonitch designs is going to be just brimming with his own unique brand of design elegance. We think this game is going to be tons of fun, so we are thrilled to add it to our P500 list today! Click on the image below or the link above to get to the P500 page for more info, and add this one to your P500 order list today!
